Intesa Sanpaolo was created in 2006 following the Banca Intesa/Sanpaolo IMI merger and is the leader in the Italian market (c.18% customer deposit and loans market share, c.4,600 branches and c.12m customers). Through a series of acquisitions, Intesa Sanpaolo has built a significant presence in Central/Eastern Europe and Egypt, where it operates approx. c.1,100 branches in 12 countries. The core business is retail and SME banking; corporate and investment banking is mainly carried out by Banca IMI. The bank also operates in the insurance market through Intesa Sanpaolo Vita and Intesa Sanpaolo Assicurazioni.
